Boedal spend more on lubricants R&D than many larger companies. Since 2018 we’ve been studying the load carrying properties of mineral oils, PAO’s, PAG’s, diesters, trimellitate esters, polyols, crop oils, blown and stand oils and estolides. Additive free. Whereas most companies would run a bench or 4 ball test, we wanted something more realistic. So we’ve been testing fluids using the FZG gear test at the Technical University of Munich. And we’re hooked. Yes tests are expensive, but the data generated are almost unbelievable. Have you ever seen an engineers face when an additive free oil fails load stage 12 ? We did that twice. SN150 and PAO 6 failed load stage 4. We’re using these data to design a range of sustainable and also synthetic esters with inherently high load carrying properties so formulators can reduces the S/P additive charge in products. We like to tease the auto engine oil formulators that they’ll soon be able to rid engine oils of ZDDP’s and VI improvers. Perhaps a dream too far, but that’s the direction.
